Why a chosen pay cut is different from a forced one
A pay cut you choose for yourself, switching industries, going back to school, or taking a more fulfilling but lower-paying role, sits in an entirely different financial category than a pay cut forced on you by a layoff or a company downsizing. The dollar amount lost might look identical on paper, but the planning around it is completely different, because you get to choose the timing, and a company doing a retrenchment typically owes you little more than the statutory minimum notice and separation pay before your income actually stops.
