What makes an organization a nonprofit

A nonprofit is an organization set up to pursue a mission, like feeding children, protecting the environment, or supporting a community, rather than to generate profit for owners or shareholders. It can still earn money, sell tickets to an event, charge modest program fees, receive donations and grants, but that money has to go back into the mission instead of being distributed to individuals as personal gain.
