How a warranty actually works

A warranty is a promise, usually written, that a product will work as described for a certain period, and that the seller or manufacturer will fix, replace, or refund it if it doesn't. It's a shift of risk: instead of you absorbing the full cost of a defective product, the company that made or sold it agrees to absorb some of that risk for a set amount of time.
