What is value investing?

Value investing is a philosophy built around one central idea: a stock is a small piece of a real business, and that business has some underlying worth separate from whatever price the market happens to quote for it today. The value investor's job is to estimate that worth as honestly as possible, then buy only when the market price sits well below it.
