SSS benefits beyond retirement: sickness, maternity, disability, and funeral
Most people think of SSS as a retirement fund you can't touch for decades, or just another line item shrinking their payslip. In reality, SSS pays out for several life events that can happen at any age, not only when you finally retire. What you can eventually claim depends on the contributions you've posted before the event happens, which is exactly why staying current on contributions matters even when retirement feels far away.
The sickness benefit is a daily cash allowance equal to 90% of your average daily salary credit, paid when you're confined, whether in a hospital or at home, for at least four days because of illness or injury and unable to work. It can cover up to 120 days in a single year, on top of whatever paid sick leave your employer already gives you. The maternity benefit covers 105 days for a live birth by normal delivery or caesarean section, with an extra 15 days for qualified solo parents, and 60 days for a miscarriage or emergency termination of pregnancy. Since the 105-Day Expanded Maternity Leave Law, it's computed at 100% of your average daily salary credit, regardless of civil status or how many pregnancies you've already had.
The disability benefit pays a monthly pension, or a one-time lump sum for members with fewer contributions, if you become partially or permanently unable to earn the way you used to, covering conditions like losing a limb or complete hearing loss in both ears. The funeral benefit is a cash grant, roughly ₱20,000 to ₱40,000 depending on the deceased member's contributions, paid to whoever actually shouldered the burial costs, meant to help cover funeral expenses right away rather than replace lost income.
Jasmine, a rank-and-file employee with an average daily salary credit of ₱800, is confined for six days due to dengue and unable to work. Her SSS sickness benefit pays 90% of that daily rate, or ₱720 a day, for those six days, a total of ₱4,320 that her employer typically advances to her and later gets reimbursed for by SSS.
Mini quiz: What percentage of your average daily salary credit does the SSS sickness benefit typically pay?
SSS covers far more than retirement, paying out for sickness, maternity, disability, and funeral costs, and what you can claim depends on the contributions you've already posted before the event happens.
